This 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500 is a restored example featuring its original 428ci Ford Cobra V8 engine. A 14-month restoration process was completed in August 1998, and the car was later sold to a collector. After taking 2nd place in the muscle car category at the 2012 Kuwait Concours d’Elegance, the car was shipped back to the United States and sold at auction to its current owner in 2013. Records are extensive and include previous titles, vehicle history from the factory, and restoration documents including photos, logbooks, and invoices.
Originally painted in Highland Green, the car has been listed as Dark Green in the Shelby Registry following restoration. The car was in good condition prior to restoration, with only a minor area of corrosion near the apron overlap requiring repair. The fiberglass nose, hood, scoops, deck lid, end caps, and taillight panel are all in good condition. Chrome trim looks bright with no apparent oxidation, and exterior rubber, glass, and badges are in great shape.
Inside, the interior is in stock configuration. Black vinyl upholstery appears to have been used minimally since restoration, and the original sun visors and dash pad have no cracks or UV damage. The headliner is original and was never removed during restoration, and the car’s seat belts, shoulder harnesses, and reels are original as well. Gauges, lights, and radio functions are said to work properly, and the restored original steering wheel and reproduction 4-speed shifter knob looks good.
The aluminum accents on the dash and door panels are bright and chrome trim around the gauge cluster is in very good condition. Interior GT500 badges show no signs of cracks in the enamel.
The GT500 is equipped with its “Ford Cobra” FE Series 428ci V8 engine with two four-barrel carburetors sitting atop a mid-rise Aluminum intake manifold. Output numbers were conservatively advertised at 355hp when new. The original carburetors were stolen prior to delivery in 1967, with correct BJ/BK carburetors being purchased, rebuilt, and installed shortly thereafter. The original block was rebuilt by Decatur Engine Service in Indiana in the 90’s using factory Ford service parts, with original parts being refurbished wherever possible. The original 1967 FoMoCo radiator has been flushed, pressure tested, and painted.
The car is sold with a good history file including Shelby documentation, past titles, a detailed ownership history of the vehicle, Kuwaiti ownership documents, and restoration photos, log books, and invoices.
