Mercedes-Benz 190SL 1957

This 1957 Mercedes-Benz 190SL was acquired by the selling dealer in 2012 following its removal from longterm storage. A body-off restoration was performed for a client of the seller from 2014-2015, and an invoice from the work totaling approximately $70k covers rebuilds of the numbers-matching 1.9L inline-four and original 4-speed manual transmission as well as interior and exterior color changes, a replacement soft top, new brake lines, and more. A fluid service was carried out earlier this year.

Originally finished in White Gray (158), the car received a body-off repaint in Medium Gray using two-stage PPG materials during the 2014-2015 rotisserie restoration. Bright trim was also re-chromed, and the glass was removed and reinstalled.

Factory 13” painted steel wheels wear body-colored hubcaps and wide whitewall tires. A replacement black soft top was installed during the refurbishment, and the matching hardtop is pictured below. The selling dealer reports that the chrome hard top trim should be replaced.

New red leather upholstery is contrasted by a body-colored dash and new rubber floor coverings with red mats. Sets of clear and red visors are included in the sale along with a top cover matching the interior.

The ivory-colored factory 2-spoke steering wheel fronts a 7k-rpm tachometer, a 140-mph speedometer, and a 5-digit odometer showing 46k miles. A period tri-band radio remains in place, while a modern Kenwood head unit featuring Bluetooth and a USB input has been installed out of sight in the glove compartment.

The 1.9-liter inline-four and 4-speed manual gearbox were overhauled by German Eurotech of Dallas, Texas, with the work said to include reconditioning of the block and overhauling the factory Solex carburetors. The engine bay was refinished in low-sheen black. Approximately 1,000 miles have been added since the refurbishment was completed according to the selling dealer, and a fluid change was performed in January 2019.
